The high-rises of downtown Los Angeles hemmed in her view to the south but she had a partial view of the rolling Hollywood Hills and the Santa Monica Mountains to the north. And she was high enough that she could see due west along the Wilshire corridor halfway to the beautiful Pacific Ocean. The Pacific Ocean. In her memory KR could still see the waves dancing off of Manhattan Beach. In the powerful swells of winter, the glittering shimmer of spring and the lazy illumination of summer, the Pacific had called her to the shore to press her bare feet into the loose sand and sort out the problems of the day. How many of my walks had that stretch of beach sustained? she wondered. How many of my footprints had it recorded, clung to, and lost to the tides?
